Kayaking to Sharp Island (Kiu Tsui Chau) and BBQ at Hap Mun Bay

Preparation:

1) Rash guards, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect you from sunburns.

2) Check the weather. No rain, thunderstorms and strong wind are best for kayaking. Strong winds are winds with any direction with force more than 3.Pls checkThe Hong Kong Observatory http://www.hko.gov.hk

3) Buy the food and necessities for BBQ.

4) Bring enough money for renting kayaks (Single seated costs HKD50 from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, HKD100 on public holidays)

The kayak renting stores offer: A kayak with a paddle, a life-jacket and water-lock bag upon request. (For more information, you may browse the Facebook of “Ah Kwok Water Sport Center”).

First To Sai Kung Town:

You may go to Choi Hung or Diamond Hill MTR Railway Station then change to bus No.92 to reach Sai Kung bus terminal.

Second To Kayak-Renting-Stores:

The two Kayak-Renting-Stores are located at the beach (see GREEN MARK) but with no changing room provided. Alternatively, we can freely use the public changing and bathing rooms of Sai Kung Tang Shiu Kin Sports Ground ( see WHITE CRICLE) or Sai Kung Tennis Courts (see YELLOW CRICLE). It takes around 10 minutes on foot from the bus and mini-bus terminals ( see RED MARK) to the beach.

Are you ready? Let's start the journey.

From the starting point of Kayak-Renting-Stores (see WHITE MARK) to Yeung Chau(see RED MARK), is only 1.1 km long. You may spot the national protected white-bellied sea eagles there.

Next stop is a spectacular natural sand levee ( tombolo ) that connects Sharp Island with the neighboring Kiu Tau(see GREEN MARK). While on high tide, we can paddle the kayak across the tombolo. The tombolo emerges only when on low tide. For such circumstance, we need to paddle around the connecting island(Kiu Tau) of the tombolo to reach the other side(see YELLOW DOT LINE). You could take a break there, and find some prehistoric volcanic rocks on the tombolo.

The final destination, Hap Mun Bay is a government managed public beach. There are facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, showers, campsites and a barbecue zone(see BLUE MARK). Kiosks selling snacks and refreshments are available. Lifeguards provide services from April to October and are on duty from 9am to 6pm every day.

Taking a very very short hike is recommended because the view is fantastic and requires only 10 minutes to walk up hill from BBQ zone to reach the photo shooting spot(see YELLOW LINE AND RED DOTS) .

Please note that the kayak can be anchored at the Hap Mun Bay beach from November to March while it is out of the swimming season. From April to October, we need to pass around the southern end of Sharp Island to anchor the kayak at the backside of Hap Mun Bay (see GREEN MARK).

On the way to backside, do not miss the scenery of sea caves and must take a photo for the memory of this journey(see RED MARK).

END--
